Synopsis
Pehli Raat is a fine tribute on celluloid to the loves and affections, sacrifies & surrerings, hopes and frustrations & the ultimate triumph and redemption of woman, as a girl, as a wife, widowed on her wedding night and as a mother.
Beena, an orphan girl reared in her maternal uncle’s house and undergoing her aunty’s constant ill treatment, grows up and is married off to a well-to-do groom which is arranged by her loving uncle. On her wedding night, Beena becomes a widow due to the untimely death of her groom. Marital love is reduced to a funeral song and to add fuel to the fire, she becomes pregnant shortly afterwards.
News of her pregnancy degenerate into a scandal and poor Beena, suspected of her chastity, is turned out of house by her shrewd sister-in-law, Jamuna. Beena is rendered into a roaming destitute, eventually delivering a baby-girl in the hospital. Poverty and misery compelled her to abandon her baby to the tender mercies of the Temple God as she is driven to commit suicide...
