Synopsis
Naya Raasta, true to its name, is the story of modern times, which tries to show a new path to our multi-religious community interlocked in the struggle of religious dogmas and untouchability.

Chander, although a very successful criminal lawyer decides to settle down in the village and look after his lands after the death of his father. He tries to practice the ideals that he had studied in the books. He mixes with his workers, sits with them, eats with them and tries to educate them. In the process, he falls in love with a Harijan girl called Shallo. At this juncture the ruthless machine of diehard society comes in motion – They try to pressurise Chander into not marrying Shallo – but find themselves helpless pitted against a mountain of ideals.

Orthodox ideas have all sorts of weapons in its armoury. Having failed in direct confrontation, they use emotional blackmail – what Panchayat couldn’t accomplish by force, Chander’s mother manages it with ease – by describing the consequences of such a marriage, she persuades Shallo to get married with the boy of her own community.

Shallo gets married – Chander is aghast and heart broken. However, this disappointment in love, instead of breaking him down, spurs a new zeal and energy in him for his ideals.

On the other side, it is just the beginning of Shallo’s misfortunes – Shallo’s past follows her like a ghost – Her affair with Chander is whipped up into a scandal. She is not accepted in the house as a bride and is asked to leave unceremoniously – She refuses to comply with the wishes of her husband and mother-in-law pleading innocence.

In the meantime, Chander’s young sister Radha gets married in the same village. Her husband Thakur Suraj Pratap Singh is a drunkard. Being an enlightened lady of virtue, Radha sets out to tame her husband on one hand and on the other she decides to put Shallo’s house in order.

Shallo’s husband (Ramu) is convinced of his wife’s virtue, but his mother, the shrew that she was, remains adamant in her behaviour. Consequently Ramu is compelled to leave the house with his wife. Thakur Suraj Pratap Singh gives them shelter in his Shikargaah. He has evil designs on Shallo. In the night, before the marriage could be consumed, he calls Ramu and expresses his desire to sleep with Shallo first in exchange of comforts and money. It hurts Ramu’s self-respect. He violently protests. As a result there is a fight. Ramu is killed. Shallo comes running. But Suraj Pratap bolts the door and proceeds to fulfill his satanic designs. Shallo kills him with the same spear which had taken the life of her husband. She is charged in the court with a double murder...
