Synopsis
“Chitralekha” is the story of a charming Court-dancer, who lived during the glorious period of the Gupta King – Samrat Chandragupta.
Samant Beejgupta, a friend of Chandragupta sees Chitralekha and falls in love with her. He is willing to sacrifice everything for her love. Chitralekha too returns his love.
But Samant Beejgupta is engaged to a young girl, Yashodhra whose father comes to know of the love affair between Chitralekha and Beejgupta. He goes to one Yogi Kumargiri and requests him to stop Chitralekha from loving Beejgupta. Yogi Kumargiri explains to Chitralekha her duties, but she did not care for the Yogi’s advice.
Chitralekha one day realizes the futility of love and all worldiness. “What is Life?” she asks herself. She remembers Yogi Kumargiri. She leaves the palace and all wordly pleasures and goes to Kumargiri.
Learning this, Beejgupta also gives up everything and goes in search of his beloved! Here fate steps in and Yogi Kumargiri who has renounced the world, forgets his lofty ideals for the charms of ‘Chitralekha’.
One night she sees the Yogi alone in her room. She learns of his evil intentions and immediately quits the Yogi’s ashram.
But where does she go? Does she meet her sweet-heart ever again or does she pine away in obscurity? These answers, whose moral has come down to us through the centuries, are provided in the dramatic climax of “Chitralekha”. |
